Contextualising or relativising evil? A probe into US antebellum slavery
Kubíček, Jan ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Topolovská, Tereza (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the abolition of antebellum slavery in the US through a leftist prism introduced by Michael Parenti. The first part provides a brief explanation of Parenti's theory on an example of the late Roman republic and its politico-economic background, which is depicted in The Assassination of Julius Caesar. In this part is also covered the historical precedent of slavery along with specific scientifically based arguments in favour of slavery developed by Samuel Cartwright. The last chapter gives a description of the process of abolition and eventually an analogy between Roman senatorial democracy and the antebellum slavery is established on a premise that in both the cases the privileged social class influenced historical narration of those events for its own benefit to cover its economic interests. Keywords: Michael Parenti, slavery, historical narrative, exploitation, Samuel Cartwright, the process of abolition

Presentation of the regime enemy in 1950s.
Hykešová, Marie ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
1 ABSTRACT The main aim of my diploma work is to show the representation of the class fighting and the class enemy presented to inhabitants of the Czech Repub- lic in the first half of 1950's, particularly during the period of Stalinism. This reflection of the class fighting and the class enemy is a consequence of reading newspaper and poetry published in the defined period. This period is characterized by bipolar dividing of the world in two blocs: socialist and capitalist that declared different contradictory ideologies. This di- viding resulted from the Cold War and both blocs were mutually competing for the final victory of one regime. Socialist bloc described rivalrous capitalist bloc in an unsightly manner and it was knowingly spreading fear of its enemies either coming from the capitalist bloc or at least co-operating with it. So my work demonstrates describing the enemies of socialism and work- ing class and also features that were attributed and ascribed to them. The con- trast between these two blocs were often used for this description. The socialist bloc was the sphere of welfare and progress while the capitalist bloc was the sphere of evil and decay. There are also narrator's memories of the 1950's to sketch in the atmos- phere of the defined period. Selected narrators recall their lives in...

Nguyenová, Thuong Ly ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Láb, Filip (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the process of the media coverage of the Tree Workers Case and with the communication between journalists and non-profit institutions. This case is about the labour exploitation of foreigners in Czech forests. The workers did not get paid and their accommodation as well as the food was insufficient. People from several national minorities were hurt by this practice. The case has been taken over by attorneys and it became public thanks to the work of non-profit institutions and the media. In the first part the thesis introduces the case and shows the development in it, furthermore it brings up the issue of cooperation between non-profit institutions and the media. Using interviews with representatives from both sides the second part describes the way they communicate, what would make it better and how medialization of non- profit stories looks like. Interviews also show the communication in the Tree Workers Case, followed by the analysis of chosen printed newspapers and magazines. The aim of this thesis is to discover the process of communication between journalists and non-profit institutions in the Czech media environment and to analyse the medialization of the Tree Workers Case.

Velký prostor je vyhrazen významnému faktoru v rámci německé válečné ekonomiky ? nuceným pracím. Poslední kapitola se věnuje důležité součásti německého velkoprostorového hospodářství ? českým zemím, respektive Protektorátu Čechy a Morava. Cílem práce je analyzovat a vysvětlit fenomén nacionální socialismu, zejména jeho ekonomiku během druhé světové války, stejně jako fungování hospodářství Protektorátu Čechy a Morava v rámci německé velkoprostorové ekonomiky.
